ABOUT BAXTERS

Our firm began in 1868 when George Baxter borrowed £100 to open a small grocery shop in Fochabers. When he started the business, George constantly exhorted himself, and those around him, to "be different, be better". The same ethos is an inspiration to the firm today, and especially to the people who work here. From our humble beginnings Baxters has grown to become one of the UK’s premium food manufacturers, with over 150 fine food products and some of the country's leading brands to our name. Some key highlights are noted below:

  • 1868 - George and Margaret Baxter borrow £100 to open a
    grocery shop
  • 1879 - Margaret commences jam-making in the back shop
  • 1946 - Gordon and Ian Baxter join the company after the war
  • 1953 - Small scale soup production commences
  • 1954 - Baxters become brand leader for Beetroot products
  • 1959 - First company to offer marmalades and jams in 12oz jar
  • 1987 - Audrey Baxter joins the company, becomes MD in 1992
  • 1996 - State-of-the-art Riverside Factory opened on the
    Fochabers site
  • 2001 - Acquisition of Garner’s Foods Ltd, based in Pershore
  • 2003 - Acquisition of CCL Foods plc, based in Colchester
  • 2003 onwards - New retail outlets opened at Blackford, Kelty, Selkirk and Ocean Terminal
  • 2004 - Acquisition of SoupExperts Inc. (St Hyacinthe, Canada)
  • 2007 - Official Opening of Baxters Foods Australia Pty Ltd
  • 2007 - Acquisition of CanGro Soups Inc. (Canada)
  • 2007 - Official Opening of Baxters Polska and new factory
    near Wolstyn
  • 2008 - Acquisition of Solemio Pty. Ltd in Melbourne, Australia

None of this could have been achieved without the innovation, hard work and commitment of all our employees over many years. Today we employ over 1,100 people across the world - so as you can imagine - there are always exciting career opportunities arising. The Group’s ambition is to double in size from today, so it needs to grow organically and by acquisition. With this growth there naturally comes a demand for more people who, in George Baxter’s words, aspire to ‘be different, be better’.

One thing which distinguishes us is that our people enjoy working for us so much that they tend to stay for a long time! We currently have 38 employees each with over 25 years’ service under their belts – amounting to a massive 1,122 years of experience that we just couldn't do without!
